Atletico Madrid are now in seventh place despite a 4-1 win over Levante.
Elias Mendes put Atletico ahead in the 19th minute before Felipe Caicedo leveled the scores for Levante from the penalty spot five minutes before the break.
But two second half goals from Argentine striker Sergio Aguero -- one in the 50th minute, the second from the penalty spot 20 minutes from the end -- put clear daylight between the teams and Raul Garcia made doubly sure of Atletico's win netting a fourth in the 84th minute.
Espanyol's hopes of playing in Europe next season faded further on Sunday as they went down 1-0 at Sporting Gijon -- Spanish striker Nacho Novo giving the home side a vital three points with a 70th minute strike.
The win keeps Gijon in 11th place with 41 points while Espanyol remain in eighth with 45 points.
opinion: that is very good for atletico because they win 3 points to the table.
