Apple to unveil new iPad on March 2

Apple to unveil new iPad on March 2
(CNN) -- It's pretty much official: After months of anticipation, Apple on Wednesday sent out invitations to a March 2 press event where the company is expected to unveil the new version of its iPad tablet computer.
The invite, e-mailed to members of the news media at about 11 a.m. ET, features a picture of an iPad-shaped device with a giant "2" in the center, seemingly a sly reference to the date of the San Francisco event and also to the device's rumored name: "iPad 2."
"Come see what 2011 will be the year of," the invite says.
Apple, the world's highest valued tech company, became the first in the field to debut a modern, touch-screen tablet computer when it unveiled the iPad in January 2010. Since then, a host of competitors, many working with Google's Android operating system, have emerged to compete with the popular iPad.
No one knows exactly what the new tablet from Apple will look like, or what it will be called, but bloggers expect the second-generation device to feature a front-facing camera, for making video calls. That's something many iPad competitors, including the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab, have going for them that the iPad currently doesn't.
Opinion
I think that Apple did very well to release a new app because besides it is they are the mobile technology pioneers, they don't think that other companies steal the ideas and made them better than the originalidea. For example the Ipad doesn't contain a camera, the Motorola Xoom and The Samsung Tab does, they are smaller in size, and maybe lighter.

I think that this is very bad because it might have killed some people and also it might have destroyed some houses or buildings. Also I found it ironic that the earthquake stroke on the aniversary of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake.
6.0-magnitude quake strikes Chile

- The quake occurred on the one-year anniversary of a deadly 8.8 temblor in the country
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.(CNN) -- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Chile on Sunday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was centered 23 miles south of Concepcion in southern Chile.
The quake, which struck at a depth of 10 miles (16 kilometers), occurred on the one-year anniversary of an 8.8-magnitude temblor that killed 521 people and left thousands homeless in the South American nation.
Rajib Karim, 31, worked as a software engineer for British Airways in the northern English city of Newcastle. He used his position to pass on information to al Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen, including to U.S.-born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, jurors in the four-week-long trial in London were told.
Karim, who was arrested last year, admitted offering himself for terrorist operations, making a jihadi recruitment video and fundraising for terrorism, but denied knowing that information he gave al-Awlaki would be used for terrorism.
Prosecutors said he passed on information that would have been useful for terrorists plotting to blow up a plane and also information that could have been used to help plan a "disruptive" cyber attack on British Airways.
Al-Awlaki is thought to be hiding out in Yemen, and was recently described by U.S. President Barack Obama's counterterror chief, Michael Leiter, as posing a bigger threat to the U.S. homeland than Osama bin Laden.
A key part of the prosecution case was a series of heavily encrypted messages between al-Awlaki and Karim, in which al-Awlaki pressed for information about Karim's job and his knowledge of airport security.
"I pray that Allah may grant us a breakthrough through you ... can you please specify your role in the airline industry, how much access do you have to airports, what information do you have on the limitations and cracks in present airport security systems?"
Karim replied: "The kuffar (a derogatory term for non-Muslims) are planning to install full body scanners across UK airports. This allows them to see things under clothes."
But he warned al-Awlaki to be realistic: "You are probably hoping that I work at the airport, but the fact is I don't. I personally know two brothers, one who works in baggage handling at Heathrow and another who works in airport security. Both are good practising brothers and sympathize towards the cause of the mujahedeen."
Replying, al-Awlaki got straight to the point:
"Our highest priority is the U.S. Anything there, even on a smaller scale compared to what we may do in the UK, would be our choice. So the question is: with the people you have is it possible to get a package or person with a package on board a flight heading to the U.S.?"
Karim, who was born in Bangladesh and is now a British citizen, had been in the UK three years at that point, prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw said.
CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said this communication confirmed what U.S. intelligence officials had been saying for some time: "This trial has presented Awlaki not only as the charismatic driving force behind al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula but also a key operational figure in the group, a guy who is orchestrating plots against the West."
The exchange of messages took place in January 2010 and February 2010, just weeks after AQAP was blamed for a failed bomb attack on a Delta Airlines transatlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian man, had trained with AQAP in Yemen before attempting to detonate explosives sewn into his underpants, according to U.S. officials.
AQAP has also been widely blamed by western intelligence officials for twin foiled attacks on cargo aircraft last October.
One device, hidden in a printer cartridge and described as "viable" by British officials, was uncovered on a UPS plane after it landed at East Midlands airport in the United Kingdom. The other -- also hidden in a printer cartridge - was found on a FedEx plane at Dubai airport.
British investigators say they have no evidence that links Karim to either of these plots. They describe him as "dedicated to the terrorist cause," though they say there was no imminent danger of him launching an attack himself.
Police have also refused to say where the original tip-off about Karim came from, saying only, "We had some information that made him of interest to us."
Karim is due to be sentenced March 18.

It was great to England that is now so them safe from terrorist attakcs
British police are investigating a claim by Sunday paper News of the World that Cole wounded 21-year-old Tom Cowan at the English Premier League champions' training ground the previous weekend.
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, however, said that the 30-year-old would be selected for Tuesday's home clash with table-topping Manchester United.
"He always had very good behavior here. Now, we have to move on. Who didn't make a mistake in his life?" the Italian said in quotes reported by the UK Press Association.
comment:
I think that this news is very interesting because I like the chelsea team. This particular player is very nice, and I think that the team have to saty with him because it woud be a very huge lostt if he goes.
Lawmakers Monday began to move ahead with proposed resolutions that would allow his casket to be displayed at the Capitol Rotunda, and plans were already in the works for his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
Buckles "died peacefully in his home of natural causes" early Sunday morning, the family said in a statement sent to CNN late Sunday by spokesman David DeJonge.
Buckles marked his 110th birthday on February 1, but his family had earlier told CNN he had slowed considerably since last fall, according his daughter Susannah Buckles Flanagan, who lives at the family home near Charles Town, West Virginia.
Buckles, who served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe during what was then known as the "Great War," rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended.
His assignments included that of an escort for German prisoners of war. Little did he know he would someday become a prisoner of war during World War II.

One person dead, 130,000 acres burned in Texas wildfires
(CNN) -- Firefighters in Texas worked Monday to contain fast-moving wildfires that had destroyed at least 60 homes, burned more than 130,000 acres, and caused an accident that killed a 5-year-old child, state forestry officials said.
The fires broke out about noon on Sunday, said Lewis Kearney, a spokesman for the forest service's Texas State Lone Star Incident Management Team. Officials believe many were started by power lines that fell from high winds.
Since that time, forestry officials, who were called in to assist local fire departments, have responded to 63 fires covering 132,854 acres, the Texas Forest Service said on its website. Most of the fires were across the Texas Panhandle, Kearney said.
Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas said a 61,000-acre fire in his county was ignited when a man cut pipe with a metal grinder in high wind Sunday. Austin Lynn Stephens, 52, was arrested and charged with criminal trespass because he was on private property when he was using the grinder.
Crews that worked through the night to douse the flames got a little help from the weather Monday. The wind that propelled the fires was somewhat calmer, although it was still breezy and parts of the area remained under a Fire Weather Watch.
Kearney said Sunday's high winds made it difficult for firefighters to use aircraft to battle the blaze.
Interstate 20 was shut down for several hours Sunday after heavy smoke from the fires limited visibility. Authorities in Midland County responded to numerous accidents along the highway, including an eight-vehicle crash in which a little girl died, according to Sgt. Pete Cordova.
One wildfire destroyed a dog kennel near Amarillo, said Capt. Wes Hall of the Amarillo Fire Department. Authorities were trying to account Monday for the animals missing or dead after the fire tore through the Willow Creek Kennel. Firefighters were able to open cages to free at least some of the dogs before the flames overtook the facility.
As many as 27 homes were destroyed in the area and "the fire was on the kennel in a matter of minutes," employee Chance Smith said, adding he did not have an exact number of dogs lost.
In the community of Matador, north of Lubbock, families could do nothing but watch as their homes burned to the ground.
The Segovias hadn't been gone 20 minutes when they returned to a panic-stricken neighborhood and found they had lost everything they owned.
"To know everything you worked so hard for, it's all gone," a tearful Juan Segovia told CNN affiliate KCBD. He and his wife, Rosemary, stared in disbelief at the blaze.
The family of seven is without a home, but grateful for what was not lost.
"I'm glad our family wasn't home when it happened," Rosemary Segovia said before falling into her husband's arms. "That's all I care about is I have my family."
One firefighter sustained second-degree burns battling a blaze near Colorado City, where a nursing home had to be evacuated before the fast moving flames swept through.
And a Potter County sheriff's deputy narrowly escaped the flames while searching homes after a mandatory evacuation was ordered for the Mesilla Park area. Deputy Kevin Parvin entered a home as the flames were bearing down on the neighborhood, Thomas said, and by the time he left the home, the smoke was so thick he couldn't find his patrol car.
Parvin had left the car running, and he followed the sound of a squeaking engine belt to find it and radio for assistance, Thomas said. He was treated for minor smoke inhalation.
No other injuries have been reported.
COMMENT:
I feel very sorry for all the people that loosed their home, but as one family said, the important thing is that they are together, not with some member missing.
Jalil quit February 21 to protest the "bloody situation" and "use of excessive force" against unarmed protesters, according to Libyan newspaper Quryna.
About 100,000 people have fled Libya to Tunisia or Egypt in roughly the past week, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees said Sunday, citing reports from the Tunisian and Egyptian governments. The evacuees include Tunisians, Egyptians, Libyans, and many from Asian countries.
Tunisia and Egypt are the two countries that have seen their leaders overthrown in the wave of protests that have swept through the Arab world over the past several weeks.
Tunisians on the border with Libya waved pre-Gadhafi-era Libyan flags in support of the opposition.
The Tunisian army, charities and ordinary Tunisians were trying to help Libyans on the border. Refugees said Tunisians were offering them food, water and the use of phones.
While CNN has staff in some cities, the network could not independently confirm reports for many areas in Libya. CNN has also compiled

After declining to recommend the popular smartphone after its original release last June, the influential product review publication is now giving a thumbs-down to the new model for Verizon's network.
According to Consumer Reports, the phone has the potential for problems with dropped calls and poor reception, just like its predecessor.
"The Verizon iPhone 4 closely resembles the original AT&T iPhone 4 in many positive respects, including offering great multimedia functionality, a sharp screen, and the best MP3 player we've seen on a phone," Paul Reynolds of Consumer Reports wrote Friday on the group's Electronics Blog.
"Unfortunately, it also shares with its sibling the possibility of compromised performance in low-signal conditions when used without a bumper or case."
The blog post swerves back and forth sharply, complimenting multiple features of the phone (and noting positive reviews from users) but saying that lab tests by its engineers showed the reception issue.
The problem involves holding the external band that wraps around the ultra-thin phone and houses its antenna. Covering the bottom left side of either band hurts reception, according to Consumer Reports and other reviewers. Bloggers dubbed it "the Death Grip."
In July, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that the company would give away free bumpers to cover the antenna on the AT&T iPhone 4. But a few weeks later, the company discontinued the program, saying the problem had been exaggerated.
Representatives for Apple and Verizon did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment for this report.
Last month, when asked about phone's prior troubles, Apple COO Tim Cook said the antenna was "going to work great." The Verizon iPhone went on sale February 10 and has a slightly different configuration than the AT&T model.
At that time, Verizon chief technical officer David Small told CNN that the antenna problem that plagued the AT&T version of the phone wouldn't have passed his company's testing.
"We have a very stringent design criteria for our antennas," he said. "You won't see any antenna issues with this device."

After months of updates to its Like button, Facebook has released an update that fundamentally changes the button's functionality to that of a Share button. Now after hitting the Like button, a full story with a headline, blurb and thumbnail will be posted to your profile wall. You'll also be given an option to comment on the story link. Previously, only a link to the story would appear in the recent activity, often going unnoticed by users.
Though users may now think twice about hitting the button, given how prominently it will appear on their walls and in their networks' newsfeeds, it should ultimately increase traffic to publishers' websites.
Facebook has slowly been rolling out updates to its Like button and has stopped developing the Share Button. Facebook Spokeswoman Malorie Lucich told us that while the company will continue to support the Share button, Like is the "recommended solution moving forward."
However, Lucich today called it a test, saying "We're always testing new products that incorporate developer feedback as we work to improve the Platform experience, and have no details to share at this time." It's unlikely that the change is just a test, however. Typically such tests from Facebook only affect a small number of users, whereas this change affects all Like buttons.
Perhaps the change was necessary. Because it was never made clear to users that the Like button would function differently than the Share button, many never understood what it meant to click Like on a piece of content. Making the result the same as the Share button could build stronger user expectations, ultimately fashioning a better user experience.

i think that the share button doesnt get more hits than the like button , and that it is an interesting new
Coach Martin Johnson's team clinched a third successive victory in this year's competition courtesy of fullback Ben Foden's only try of the match two minutes after halftime, with the scores level at 9-9.
Replacement fly-half Jonny Wilkinson then gave England an unassailable eight-point lead with a 51st-minute penalty that took the 31-year-old Toulon player back above New Zealand's Dan Carter on 1190 overall.
Defeat for France ended coach Marc Lievremont's hopes of achieving a second successive Grand Slam.
