Manchester United rounded off their title winning season with a 4-2 victory at Old Trafford which sent battling underdogs Blackpool down to the second flight Sunday.
Blackpool, who led 2-1 at Old Trafford after an hour, were resigned to their fate ahead of the final whistle, but Birmingham were finally sunk by an injury time Roman Pavlyuchenko goal in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
It was Pavlyuchenko's second of the game to seal his side's Europa League place by clinching fifth in the standings.
But for League Cup winners Birmingham it was a cruel late blow after Craig Gardner had pulled them level with a late goal.
Wolves, who trailed 3-0 at home to Blackburn, who were also battling to avoid the drop, hit back in the second half with goals from Jamie O'Hara and Stephen Hunt.
In the final analysis, Hunt's second would have proved conclusive had Birmingham salvaged a point at Tottenham because Wolves had scored more goals than their midlands neighbors.
Wigan, who began the afternoon in the bottom three, owed their survival to a Hugo Rodallega's 79th-minute headed goal in the 1-0 win at Stoke.
Blackpool had looked likely to make an unlikely escape after goals from Charlie Adam and Gary Taylor-Fletcher put them ahead following Park Ji-Sung's early opener.
But Brazilian midfielder Anderson swept home an equalizer before an Ian Evatt own goal put United ahead. Michael Owen, possibly playing his final match for United, wrapped up the win.
"This is a special group down here and we're very disappointed right now," Blackpool's popular manager Holloway told Sky Sports before United lifted their 19th English championship title.
In other EPL action Sunday, Manchester City clinched third spot with a 2-0 win at Bolton, with Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko scoring.
Arsenal finished fourth after a 2-2 draw at Fulham and must now go into Champions League qualifying after a disappointing end to their season.
Everton beat second-placed Chelsea 1-0 with Jermaine Beckford scoring while Liverpool went down to a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.
West Bromwich Albion recovered from 3-0 down at Newcastle to draw 3-3 to cap a remarkable revival under Roy Hodgson, having been deep in relegation trouble when he took over.
West Ham's miserable season was complete after a 3-0 home defeat to Sunderland.
