Come back BlackBerry, all is forgiven

My BlackBerry Bold is back on my hip, vibrating away every time I get an e-mail, and I am relieved.

I have lived with and mostly loved a BlackBerry since the days following the 7/7 attacks on the London transport sector. That's when CNN rolled them out for reporters.

Since then I have used it for reference for live shots, for e-mailing of course, and to take photos – work and personal.

But the BB was never my phone. For that, I had a good old sturdy Nokia. It was used for beepers (live audio interviews into TV shows from a phone,) and of course texting.

Then in May, my beloved but dull Nokia broke and I was given my first, shinny whiz-bang iPhone 4.

Wow! I was introduced to the world of useful apps, of fluid touch screens and, unfortunately, of short battery life.

I decided to use the iPhone 4 it for my all my work needs – phone, emailing, texting and photos for work. I even joined iTunes and rediscovered 80s music. The BlackBerry was turned off and put in the bottom of the bag.

Bad idea.

When I recently was in Norway covering the terrorist attacks, I pulled my BlackBerry out of the bottom of my bag, charged it up and used it night after night during live shots. The iPhone simply could not stay powered up while were out of the hotel for six or seven hours.

This is not a pointed attack of the iPhone. Frankly BB devices are poor when it comes to music and apps and surfing the web – though that may change with the recent launch of the latest generation of operating system and handsets.

But it’s really about what works for what job and what sacrifices you are willing to make. I am not willing to use one device, especially now that I have to find plugs everywhere I go as I watch the iPhone 4 battery drain away (yes, I turned off many features and have turned down the brightness, but man, it’s just not good enough.)

With the launch of the new BlackBerrys, it’ll be very interesting to see if RIM can take some of the thunder away from Apple.

And maybe it’s time to try a Nokia Smartphone to see if the Finnish company can win me back?

comment: I think that the blackberry is a good cel because it tells you when a message comes and you can answer fast I would like to have a blackberry.
